JAPAN, SPONSORED BY THE DAIWA FOUNDATION

Japan, as the final stop of the Silk Road, is often overlooked in the Silk Road narrative, along with the votives that litter its shrines and temples. These votives capture history in a precious way: the scraps of paper and wooden tablets marking a person, a time, a place and in many cases a human want, need or desire. Likewise, each painting in this series tells a story. Their construction is made up of many elements; Japanese papers gifted by artisans during my journey, symbols drawn and redacted from museum artefacts, antique unused notebooks salvaged from junk shops, and the application of ancient techniques passed down by masters.
